Give the Scappoose Indians all the credit in the world; they did everything they needed to do to win the 4A state team championship.
The 13 Indians in the tournament collectively had a great first round, and they kept advancing and gathering team points. The team led at the conclusion of wrestling each day, but fell behind a couple of times during the middle of rounds. Scappoose’s great strength lay in their upper weights and those lads came through time and time again.
By Friday night’s semi-finals, the Indians had six wrestlers with a chance to make the finals. Five of them succeeded.
After all the consolation rounds late Saturday afternoon, Scappoose was 13 points ahead of Sweet Home. Sweet Home had just three wrestlers in the finals and would need to win all three matches by a pin and for Scappoose to lose all of their matches.
Gabe Goodrich did away with any drama by pulling off a pin in his first match for six team points. Sweet Home also got a pin, but at best would still come up a point short. The team trophy was decided.
Scappoose Coach Jim Jones knew it was over, unless something totally bizarre happened. Nothing did.
