It’s not a misprint, the Lions lost to Liberty last week, 112-94.
St. Helens tried a little different strategy at Liberty in their season-ending game, but it didn’t quite work out.
St. Helens Coach Todd Smith said they went away from the zone offense in an attempt to cut down on Liberty’s three-point shots that killed them in their last meeting. It didn’t pan out, the Falcons hits 17 threes out of an amazing 57 shots.
“They were beating us on the dribble,” Smith said. “If someone had told me before the game that we would score 94 points, I would have thought we’d win. Defensively, we just didn’t have enough stops.”
St. Helens still had the two high scorers in the game, Spencer Gordon and Zach Sweeney with 35 and 29 respectively. “Spencer just went nuts in the fourth quarter,” Smith said. Gordon would hit seven of nine threes in the game, go six for six at the free throw line, and hit 11 of 16 field goal attempts. Sweeney was 12 of 19, mostly from underneath the basket.
The game marked the end of the season for the Lions, one that had promise, but never quite came to fruition.
