Scappoose’s Cory Hendryx proved his mettle from behind the three point and free-throw lines Thursday night, knocking in 27 of the team’s 57 points in a resounding overtime season finale to topple tough-ranked Cowapa rivals, the Astoria Fishermen.
The victory improves Scappoose’s season standings to 15-10, and 7-3 in Cowapa League play, and broke a nine-game losing streak against the Fishermen.
“They beat us nine straight times, and they had to win to be league champs, so we ruined their chance,” said coach Ryan Svensen.
And Hendryx was further honored Monday when he was voted player of the year for the Cowapa League.
“For him to have the kind of success he’s had is really a testament to his work ethic,” Svensen said. “He’s the hardest working and toughest kid I’ve ever coached. His desire to be the best he can be is just incredible.”
