The St. Helens Lions rolled to a 54-27 win over the visiting Sherwood Bowmen on Thursday night in one of the quickest matches of the season.

St. Helens had the upper hand much of the night, recording seven wins by pin, and picking up two forfeits. Sherwood had four pins, and narrowly won one match by a decision. Of the 12 contested matches, 11 were decided by pin, nine of those in the first round. All of St. Helens’ pins came in the first round.

“It was a good night for the team,” St. Helens Coach Mike McCoy said. “I was worried that the senior night ceremonies might be a distraction but they handled it well.  Sherwood has several highly ranked individuals so I thought the score might end up closer than it turned out.”

Match winners by fall for St. Helens included Jon Luttrell (119), Izak Snyder (130), Weston Tanner (140), Doug Girard (145), Zach Gross (152), Jedi Asher (171), and Zach Nutting (215). Ben Minton (112) and Brad Johnson (285) picked up forfeits.

The match between the Lions’ Aaron Vongsaravanhlao and Sherwood’s Kyle McClaine brought the crowd to their feet. Vongsaravanhlao went into the final match trailing 5-8 and tied it up at 9-9. He let up McClaine for an escape and then took him down for an 11-10 lead with about 30 second remaining. Another escape and it was tied again at 11-all. McClain got a takedown with 11 seconds left for a 13-11 win.
