ADVERTISEMENTS
The St. Helens Lady Lions stayed with both Century and Wilsonville for awhile last week, but in the end found themselves down.
St. Helens had played Century pretty tough in their first meeting earlier, but this time they fell behind by the end of the first period and never really got back in the swing of things. They trailed 31-18 by halftime, but were only outscored by six in the second half. Brooke Nolte led the Lady Lions in scoring with 14 points. The game also marked the return of McKinleigh Crandall to the line-up and she had eight points. However, she didn’t play in Friday’s game.
The Lady Lions faced one of the biggest teams they will meet all season in Wilsonville, but didn’t let it bother them too much in the first period. After falling behind by nine, St. Helens got big threes from Emily Monroe and Jillian Ross. That closed it to three. Ross made a basket in the closing seconds of the period to keep pace. Monroe would lead St. Helens with 10 and Ross added nine.
St. Helens had trailed Wilsonville 27-4 on the road and was down 46-8 at the half. This time at home they were down just 15-12 after one, but slipped a bit in the second and were behind 34-17 at the half.
The Lady Lions had their moments in the second half, but two Wilsonville runs helped them put the game away.
The Lady Lions hosted Sherwood on Tuesday and travel to Glencoe on Friday. They are at Hilhi on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
