close game with Century slip from their grasp on Tuesday night, and couldn’t find an answer at second-ranked Wilsonville on Friday night.
The Lions were within five of Century at the break and had a good chance of notching an important win.
“We made some adjustments at halftime,” Coach Todd Smith said, “but down the stretch we made some poor decisions and took some ill-advised shots. We had two turnovers and let them get a four-six point lead. The game was called a lot different than the Liberty game–the difference between day and night. We had fouls to give just to get them to the line.”
St. Helens had a brief lead in the second half, but Century was able to capitalize on some of the Lions mistakes to nab the win.
St. Helens fell behind Wilsonville early and would score just 10 points in the first half. They only had 20 after three periods.
“Wilsonville defended us tough. They kept us from getting in our sets and forced some early turnovers,” Smith noted.
The Lions were down by 25 going into the second half and trailed 58-20 going into the fourth.
The Lions were at Sherwood on Tuesday and host Glencoe this Friday. They host Hillsboro on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Scoring:
Century 57, St. Helens 49
