ALMOST PINNED—Scappoose’s Jesse Oblack nearly has Chris Haskell of Sheridan pinned in the semifinals of Friday’s Marv Lofland Invitational in Scappoose. The Indians had five champions and five runners-up in the tournament.
ADVERTISEMENTS
The competition overall may not have been as tough as the Scappoose Indians have seen this season, but they used their own wrestling tournament Saturday to tune-up for their dual match with Cowapa League Tillamook this week and district next.
The Indians easily won their Marv Lofland Invitational, scoring nearly 50 points more than Nestucca, the next closest team. The Tribe had five champions in the tournament, four second-place finishes, and three thirds.
“We had some kids that beat people that had beaten or pinned them earlier in the year,” Scappoose Coach Jim Jones said. “Brandon Bernardi beat a kid in the semis that had pinned him twice in the Pac-Rim tournament. Dakota Sue also beat a kid that had pinned him twice in the Pac-Rim.”
The Indians got firsts from Gabe Goodrich at 119 pounds, Jordan Smith at 130, Travis Hill at 171, Jesse Oblack at 189, and Trever Gwin at 215. The squad dominated in the upper weights–taking first and second at 171 and 189.
“The tournament was a good step for us. Our technique is better. We had some solid matches, even if the level (of competition) was not as high as some of the others (tournaments),” Jones said. “I’m proud of our young kids. We’re asking a lot of them. When they’re young and not as strong as their opponents they’re a little mismatched. I’m impressed with their ability to fight off their back. I really like that–it’s a good starting point no matter whether or not they get pinned. They’re not afraid to step into a varsity match and tough enough to handle a loss.”
The Indians have a dual match with Tillamook this Wednesday, and then district at Banks next week.
