Indians score well at HRV tourney

Tribe has one champion, and three 2nd-place finishes in tourney

TOURNEY CHAMP—Scappoose’s Jordan Smith won this match against T.J. Vergotis of Banks on Thursday, and then won the 130-pound title at a Hood River tournament on Saturday.

The Scappoose Indians were still missing a few wrestlers when they went to the Hood River Elks Memorial Tournament last Saturday, but still brought home hardware.

The Tribe had one champion, three seconds, a fourth, and two fifths in the 18-team tournament. They finished fourth in the team standings just five points behind Pendleton.

Top effort of the tournament for the Indians was recorded by 130-pounder Jordan Smith who pinned his first opponent, won by a technical fall in his second match, 17-8 in the semis, and by a major decision, 14-3, in the championship.

Gabe Goodrich pinned his first three opponents in the 119-pound class, but lost a slim decision, 8-7, in the finals. Aaron Aguilera pinned his first two opponents, won a 3-2 decision, then lost a 10-6 decision in the finals. Jesse Oblack also pinned his first two opponents, won a 4-3 decision, but was pinned in the finals.

One of the hardest rounds was recorded by Adam Raethke at 160 pounds. He lost his first match in overtime, then had an OT win, a 4-3 decision, and a 7-6 OT win to take fourth. Brandon Bernardi and Brixton Apon each had firth place finishes for the Tribe.

Scappoose travels to Yamhill-Carlton this Wednesday, then hosts their own tournament, the Marv Lofland Invitational on Saturday.
