The Scappoose Indians charged from 15 points down on Friday night to nip Mark Morris at the wire and post their second non-league victory of the week.

The Indians outscored the Monarchs 18-3 in the last seven minutes of the contest, pulling out the win with a Cory Hendryx basket that put them in front for the first time since the first basket of the game. Mark Morris’ desperation basket at the end failed.

Hendryx may have scored the game winner, but it was Jacob Kienlen that deserves credit for much of the comeback.

“Jacob Kienlen was on fire in the fourth. He scored 13 points. They missed two free throws with 11 seconds to go, and we got the inbounds pass to Cory. He got almost to the rim and sank it from about five feet off the glass,” Scappoose Coach Ryan Svenson said.

Svenson said the game wasn't a fluke. “We were down 51-37 but they looked a little tired. We just wore them down all game and then took advantage of them. Max (Updike) played well, Jacob Watt only scored one, but he had six assists, and Nick (Paxton) did a nice job on the glass.”

They Indians stayed even in the first period, until Mark Morris went on an 11-3 run near the end. Scappoose closed that up in the second period and were within three points, but a trey at the buzzer gave Mark Morris a boost.

At Napavine, Wash. last week, the Indians found themselves trailing at the half, 29-22. Hendryx and Updike led them back in the third period with an 18-8 effort that put Scappoose in front. Watt contributed a three in the frame, while Updike scored nine of his 19 points and Hendryx had six of his 10. A trey and a deuce from Kienlen in the fourth period helped Scappoose maintain their lead.

Scoring:

Scappoose 51, Napavine 48
