he St. Helens Lions probably couldn’t have beaten Glencoe in Thursday’s Northwest Oregon Conference dual match, but it might have been much closer if things had gone a little more St. Helens way.
The Lions won only three matches and ended up on the short end of a 53-12 final score.
Weston Tanner got the only pin for the Lions, dominating his Glencoe opponent at 140 pounds. Doug Girard followed for St. Helens with a 7-0 decision at 145 pounds.
“We did not match up well and a couple of our guys didn’t wrestle their best,” St. Helens Coach Mike McCoy said. “Glencoe is a very good team and they were favored to win.”
“We worked hard and we went into the match with a good attitude,” McCoy added. “In a couple of early matches when things were not going our way the wrestlers didn’t handle it very well. Weston and Doug were solid. Aaron V (Vongsaravanhlao) defaulted because he had a severe cramp in his calf. Jedi lost to a very good wrestler.”
