Scappoose’s dual match with Astoria was almost decided before it began.
Astoria forfeited five weight classes for 30 points, and Scappoose one–that left just eight contested matches and six of those were decided by pins. The match was the first home contest for Scappoose this season.
“We are doing well as a group,” Scappoose Coach Jim Jones said. “We have a number of younger athletes who are competing well at the varsity level. It is not an easy task to jump from middle school competition right into a high school varsity lineup. Although some of these athletes are not earning as many wins as they would like, they are keeping a great fighting spirit. The experience they are gaining now will be invaluable in their future careers.”
The best matches of the evening were the first and the last.
Scappoose’s 215-pounder Trever Gwin had a tough battle with Astoria’s Chance Banta in the first match. Gwin was in charge most of the way, but it took a hard-fought effort for a slim 4-2 win.
