Submitted artist rendering by Michael Curry / The South County Spotlight
THAR SHE BLOWS – This artist rendering by Michael Curry is only an initial concept, but it gives a look into the artistic thoughts the Scappoose designer is considering for the fountain set for Heritage Park.
Taking in the sunshine by the skate park on Monday afternoon, Anna Penn just got some great news — she learned that plans are in the works to craft a one-of-a-kind fountain smack dab in Scappoose’s Heritage Park.
Her 9-year-old foster son has been dying for some sort of fun kid-stuff to do in town, but they have come up short. When he is told that he would be able to play in the fountain, the child does a wacky dance and shouts one word: “yes.”
“I’ve been in Scappoose now for a year,” the mother said. “And recreation for kids is limited.”
The fountain, led by the Rotary Club of Columbia County, has been in talks for some time, but it has recently kicked into high gear after Michael Curry and his world-renowned Scappoose design studio decided to lend services to the project.
In a recent meeting with Gary Liao, president of the local Rotary chapter, and others last month Curry made a quick sketch about his vision for the fountain — he plans to utilize sound, sights and touch to tell a story — all to promote the charitable spirit of Rotary and the community.
Liao said he was more than impressed and thrilled with Curry and his services, which he is volunteering at no cost.
Liao said the fountain, which is still in it’s prelimenary design stages, is a true community project. Many regional companies, including Custom Metal Fab, and the DLR Group architecture firm, have promised their abilities and products to the project.
Even the Scappoose School District has said it will donate leftover concrete from its recent construction.
